TOTTORI Prefecture

eography and climate

Located in the northeastern part of the Chugoku Region, Tottori Prefecture is long and thin in shape, stretching 120 km from east to west and 20 to 50 km from south to north. It has a mild climate with frequently clement weather from spring to autumn with some snowfall in winter. The seasonal transitions in this prefecture are quite distinctive and beautiful to witness.

 

History and culture

Bordering the Japan Sea, the prefecture has prospered through active exchanges with the continent since ancient times. Some important remains are situated in this prefecture, including the Mugibanda Remain, one of the largest colony remains in Japan of the Yayoi period, and the Aoya Kamijichi Remain, where a human scull that contains brain tissue was found, which was one of the few cases in the world. The prefecture is also known as the locale of a myth “Inaba no Shirousagi (White Rabbit of the Country of Inaba)”, which depicts the foundation of Japan.

Industry and economy

Tottori is also renowned for a variety of fishery products in season which are landed at different harbors in this prefecture, including the large-scale Sakaiminato Harbor. It also produces various agricultural products, such as fruits (20th Century Pears) cultivated in hilly areas, rakkyo grown on the sand dunes, as well as watermelons and broccoli. Accordingly, the prefecture has been active in promoting its abundant bounty from the mountains and sea under the slogan, “Shoku-no Miyako Tottori (Food-rich prefecture)”. With regard to manufacturing, Tottori is home to several precision instrument manufacturers, including those utilizing liquid crystal, with the food industry also playing a major role.

 

Tourism

The prefecture is particularly proud of Tottori Sand Dune, the largest in Japan, and its spectacular coastline attractions, such as Uradome Beach located in Sanin Kaigan National Park, which has been elevated to the ranks of the UNESCO International Geoparks. It is also known for having more than ten natural hot springs dotted around different areas of the prefecture. Mt. Daisen, situated in the west, is the highest mountain in the Chugoku region and offers opportunities for a variety of natural experiences, such as mountain climbing and skiing. Another tourist attraction is “Mizuki Shigeru Road”, celebrated as the home of a famous cartoon, “Gegege no Kitaro.”
