Japan is blessed with plentiful water resources. Surrounded by the sea, the country has rivers of all sizes flowing down from the mountains that occupy 70% of the country, and the humid climate brings substantial rainfall. In the ancient expression admiring the country,"Toyoashihara no mizuho no kun" (the country of rich harvests of fresh rice), the long, deep involvement of people with water is seen.
The Kansai region's high quality of spring water has led to the development of an active sake industry as well as the cultivation of numerous food products making use of water. From industry to transport to recreation, the influence of water is felt on all aspects of daily life. It is therefore vital that water be conserved and effectively used as a resource. This issue discusses Kansai's water assets together with the measures being taken to ensure their future.
