Mr. ULBRICHT at work
|
"Awa washi is an excellent paper. Japanese handmade washi is the best paper in
the world," praises Gangolf ULBRICHT. Mr. Ulbricht, from Germany, is a visiting
trainee at the Hall of Awa Japanese Handmade Paper, where a range of activities
are carried out to preserve and disseminate 1,300-year-old Awa washi traditions
and manufacturing techniques and promote the development of washi.
The trainee program, started 15 years ago when the center was still an actual
washi production center, aims to spread Japanese washi to the world through trainees
from abroad. To date, it has hosted about 50 participants. Their occupations and
purposes vary, but many of them take part in order to create art objects using
washi. During his three weeks at the center, Mr. Ulbricht was trained in a number
of techniques, including nagashi-suki. In this way, the traditions of washi are
being sent around the world to live for centuries to come.
