Linking ideas of the world.
Kansai International Airport, Japan's first 24 hours a day airport, was built on reclaimed land five kilometers offshore to protect the local environment and control noise pollution. Being the offshore airport, it is based on an original design by the Italian architect Renzo PIANO. The passenger terminal building, a defining element from the public's viewpoint, is a cooperative joint effort by companies from Japan and foreign countries. The architecture is internationally renowned for its blend of artistic and functional features: the roof's design creates an image of soaring, and the grand atrium extends across separate floors for domestic and international flights. The Kansai International Airport, blending environmental concepts and a progressive design process brought together with international cooperation, has set the standard for architecture in the 21st century.
