Gagaku Instruments

The instruments used in performances of gagaku (court music) and Noh plays are masterpieces incorporating a number of traditional decorative arts, including the crafting of wood and bamboo, lacquerwork, metalworking, embossed gilt lacquerwork, and mother-of-pearl inlay. Their graceful and elegant designs date back some 1,300 years to the Heian period (794-1185). Alongside the performing traditions themselves, these musical instruments bring to life a magnificent history of artisanship of the highest order.
