Wakayama's historic mountains include Koyasan in
the north and Kumano Sanzan in the south, both worshipped as holy places since
ancient times and home to solemn Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Also culturally
valuable are Negorodera Temple, which appeared at the peak of the Kamakura Period,
and Kimiidera Temple and Kokawadera Temple, both visited by pilgrims on the 33-Point-Visit,
in which pilgrims visit 33 designated temples and shrines where kannon images
are enshrined. Wakayama Castle was the headquarters of one of the three major
families in the Tokugawa Clan. At Kii Fudoki-no-oka, typical farmhouses, fishing
family houses, and merchants' houses are on display.
