Nara boasts a number of old buildings which display
the very roots of Japanese architecture, including Asukadera Temple (now called
Genkoji Temple), believed to have been the start of Buddhist temple architecture
in Japan, and Horyuji Temple, the world's oldest wooden structure. Along with
Kyoto, Nara Prefecture also contains many cultural assets and holds the largest
number of buildings designated National Treasures. Unique among Nara's historical
buildings are those which were erected in the Ancient and Medieval Periods, such
as Todaiji Temple, built in the Nara Period to serve as the headquarters of all
kokubunji, or provincial temples. Others include Kofukuji Temple and Kasuga Shrine,
which saw their prosperity peak during the Medieval Period. At Imai-cho, Kashihara
City, an area containing 8 minka designated Important Cultural Assets and Buddhist
temples have been left in the traditional style to continue its atmosphere of
serene dignity.
