Sekijuku, Suzuka-gun (Post town on former Tokaido
Highway)
Kawasaki-cho,Ise City(Houses in wholesaling area)
|
This region was important in ancient times for
both land and sea voyages to eastern Japan. Enjoying a status much like a capital
city, the remains of its ancient temples are still seen today. These include Buddhist
temples and Shinto shrines built in the Muromachi, Momoyama, and Edo Periods.
The buildings of the Ise Jingu Shrines are considered rare and invaluable "living
history" as they have been razed and rebuilt using the original methods every
20 years for centuries. Many large, tastefully refined minka of influential village
headmen or wealthy merchants are also seen. Post towns, or sekijuku, along the
Tokaido Highway, one of Japan's ancient trunk lines, and the port town Kawasaki-cho
reflect the prosperity of those historic times in stately streetscapes.
