KYOTO Prefecture

Gion Shinbashi Higashiyama-ku,Kyoto (Houses in chaya-machi)

Because Kyoto City was the capital of Japan for many centuries, beginning in 794, Kyoto Prefecture came to have an abundance of cultural assets, greater than any other prefecture both in quantity and quality. These include shinden-style residences favored by Heian aristocrats, Buddhist temples built after the Kamakura Period and characterized by their scale and stateliness, time-honored Shinto shrines, and tea houses and sukiya-style residences that arose out of the development of the tea ceremony. Kyoto is truly a showcase of Japanese architecture. Furthermore, minka, including machiya and noka, extant in Kyoto feature designs and styles unique to the area.
