HYOGO Prefecture

Sasayama Town, Taki-gun (Samurai residence in castle town)

Hyogo Prefecture was, in the past, made up of five feudal regions, Settsu, Harima, Tanba, Tajima, and Awaji, and a unique history and culture can been seen in each. The Harima region has the greatest number of historic buildings designated as cultural assets because it played a vital role in ancient times as well as throughout the Medieval Period. The center of the region is today's Himeji City, where the beautifully soaring Himeji Castle was honored as modern Japan's first National Treasure. Also remaining are a variety of residences representing each period from the medieval to the modern, including Japan's oldest minka. Results of the investigation into damage caused by the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995 serve as an important reference for the preservation of cultural structures.
