FUKUI Prefecture

Kumakawashuku, Kaminaka Town, Onyu-gun(Post town on Wakasa Highway)

Imajo Town,Nanjo-gun(Post town on Hokuriku Highway)

Fukui Prefecture has 11 sites where Buddhist temples were located. Buildings still standing were constructed during and since the Medieval Period. Because the prefecture had two provincial capitals, Wakasa and Echizen, each district developed a unique architectural style. In Wakasa, Buddhist temples were built according to the Japanese style, established in the Nara and Heian Periods as a Japanized form of an imported continental architectural style. Those in Echizen were built mainly in the architectural style of Shinto shrines. In Echizen, large buildings such as the main hall of a Buddhist temple of the Jodoshin sect were first seen after the Edo Period. Minka in Wakasa were characterized by the Kyoto style, whereas those in Echizen generally featured a stout structure with thick pillars. These minka often had special rooms where Buddhist household altars were located, characterizing the influence of the Shin sect.
