Historical Building
|
This temple was originally built in 1000, and after the first feudal lord of the Kishu clan, Tokugawa Yorinobu, designated it as the clan's family temple in 1666, it prospered greatly. The total area of the precincts is 15,000 tsubo (approximately 49,500 square meters), and its graveyard, reserved for the Kishu feudal lords, is the largest daimyo graveyard in Japan. The main hall, designated as a National Treasure, is approximately nine square meters. It is constructed in the irimoya zukuri (hipped and gabled) style with a tiled roof and represents the classic features of Japanese architecture in the late Kamakura Period. The daimon and tahoto were built in the early Muromachi Period.
